13 Nov Winter Wonderland Architecture: Designing for Snow and Stars
Creating a building in a cold, snowy climate presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. For our projects at the Glass Resort, the goal was to design spaces that not only withstand the cold but also embrace the stunning natural environment. These projects are an example of architectural design in extreme climates, where every detail, from the material choices to the window placement, is considered to enhance the user’s experience.
The design centered on the idea of bringing the outside in, even when temperatures are below freezing. The premium lodges at the Glass Resort are specifically crafted to offer unobstructed views of the night sky, providing guests with a chance to see the Northern Lights from the comfort of their beds. This focus on natural spectacle elevates the hospitality architecture from a simple accommodation to a destination in its own right.
By focusing on durable, insulating materials and a thoughtful layout, these projects aim to show that sustainable tourism in a sensitive environment is possible. They are an exploration of how architecture can be used to create a memorable experience, not by competing with nature, but by working in harmony with it. These designs demonstrate a quiet reverence for their location, allowing the natural world to be the true highlight.
