Breaking the Mold: A New Look at Traditional Architecture

Architecture is not always about inventing something entirely new. Sometimes, the most interesting designs come from revisiting a traditional form and reinterpreting it for a modern context. This approach allows a building to feel both timeless and contemporary, creating a bridge between past and future. Our work on the Pyramid House and the Jeris Hotel Sauna Repo are two examples of this philosophy in action, showing how a familiar idea can be given a fresh perspective.

The Pyramid House, a striking piece of modern architecture, takes a classic geometric shape and transforms it into a highly functional home. While the pyramid form is thousands of years old, its application here is entirely new. The design shows how traditional forms can inspire innovative living spaces, and its timber frame construction provides a nod to classic building materials in a modern, sustainable context.

Similarly, the Jeris Hotel Sauna Repo reconsiders the quintessential Finnish sauna. Rather than building a conventional wooden structure, we focused on reinterpreting the experience itself. The result is a space that honours the ritual and tradition of the sauna while using clean, minimalist lines and modern materials to create a serene, almost meditative environment. This architectural reinterpretation shows that a deep respect for tradition doesn’t have to mean sticking to old blueprints. It can be a starting point for innovative design that elevates and reframes a cherished practice. By breaking the mold, these projects create something familiar yet entirely new.
